Blue carbon
Coastal mangroves, seagrasses and saltmarshes are continually being diminished and destroyed worldwide yet are essential for healthy oceans. Blue carbon aims to dramatically increase carbon sequestration in these types of wetlands through restoration and conservation of habitats.
Fisheries, coastal water quality and protection, and climate change adaptation are all flow-on benefits of blue carbon.
UQ experts are overcoming scientific, policy, legal and economic barriers to make blue carbon a central feature of coastal management, restoration and conservation in Australia and around the world.
