Marine plastics research theme
Plastics last indefinitely in the environment and are pervasive in even the most remote marine habitats. Harmful effects on marine animals are well documented and there is increasing evidence that micro-plastics and associated dangerous chemicals persist through the marine food chain to human plates. Meanwhile, policies are weak and communities in developing countries have limited choices.
Our multidisciplinary team is identifying novel solutions at each stage of the plastics life cycle to reduce it entering the environment. We’re developing strategies for improved materials, manufacturing, commercial/community/consumer alternatives and end-of-life management.
