Research Stations and Facilities
The University of Queensland has two modern, fully equipped research stations and one research facility at which marine and terrestrial field and lab work can be conducted. Both stations provide accommodation, wet and dry laboratories, boating facilities, computer/library rooms and teaching facilities. A third, low infrastructure research facility, the Terrestrial Ecological Research Facility, has recently opened. The Terrestrial Ecological Research Facility (TERF) is the University of Queensland’s newest research facility and its only research station developed specifically to support experimental field ecology research and teaching. Located a short 25 minute drive from the St Lucia campus, between Moggill Road and the Brisbane River, TERF is a 20 hectare reserve dominated by former cattle pasture, and small patches of eucalypt woodland. The property has river front access for work focused on riverbank plant and animal communities, as well as a small, dammed freshwater pond. There are a range of native and exotic plant and animal species found in TERF to facilitate a range of projects. Because this reserve is not focused on rare or endangered ecosystems, this site is ideal for manipulative field experiments that are not ecosystem dependent.
In addition to 20 hectares of land, TERF also offers a small on-site dry lab for sample sorting, potting and other field preparation activities. There are five permanent weather stations on site and recorded climate data are freely available to all TERF users. We also have a professionally produced Digital Elevation Model (DEM). All data associated with this DEM are also available.
TERF is a user friendly, low infrastructure facility, designed to ensure accessibility to students working on independent research projects or course-based projects in addition to UQ staff. Moreton Bay Research Station
Moreton Bay Research Station (MBRS) is located 40km east of Brisbane on the Moreton Bay side of North Stradbroke Island (NSI). The station provides direct access to the waters of Moreton Bay and the Pacific Ocean as well as the unique terrestrial environments of the 27,700 hectare sand island.
Heron Island Research Station
Heron Island Research Station (HIRS) is situated on the southern Great Barrier Reef, 80 kilometres offshore from the city of Gladstone and is the oldest and largest marine research station on the Reef. The island is an 8 hectare, 0.8 km long, densely forested sand cay on the leeward edge of a flourishing 27 km2 coral reef platform which straddles the Tropic of Capricorn.
The University of Queensland has 14 glasshouses conveniently located at the St Lucia campus with a range of Quarantine, PC2, temperature controlled and evaporative cooled options. For more details, see the Central Glasshouse Services (CGS) website.
The Ecology Centre has three vehicles available for hire by UQ staff and students. These vehicles are managed by the School of Biological Sciences. More details can be found on the Vehicle Hire page.
A wealth of facility and technological resources, useful for Ecology Centre researchers, are housed within a variety of Schools, Centres and University Institutes at UQ. The Research Facilities Portal is intended as a jumping off point for both new and experienced researchers to explore these resources. It is a means of illustrating the breadth of scientific research within UQ, as well as a tool for facilitating the usage of these facilities by researchers.
The Centre for Marine Science offers a world-class environment for postgraduate and postdoctoral research in marine science, with over 50 independent Research Groups encompassing a wide range of disciplines. Creating a vibrant marine science research culture, CMS currently includes over 200 PhD candidates and 50 postdoctoral research scientists from around the world.
CMS also benefits from significant marine and laboratory research infrastructure on its main campus in St Lucia, Brisbane and at its marine field stations, Heron Island Research Station and Moreton Bay Research Station, which boast advanced wet and dry laboratory and boating facilities.
Research Group Leaders are always interested to hear from motivated and suitable students and researchers that want to develop and further their careers. If you are a particularly interested in a specific research area, group leader or laboratory you can contact any of the Research Group Leaders directly at any time. This is the primary means by which postgraduate students and postdocs find positions in CMS.
Postgraduate Scholarships and Admission
The PhD program at The University of Queensland is research intensive and typically completed with the submission and acceptance of a thesis between 3 and 4 years from commencement.
The University of Queensland and The Australian Government offer a range of full and top-up scholarships to Australian and International students. The UQ Graduate School provides all the necessary information to apply for these scholarships and a place in our PhD program.
Postdoctoral Research Positions
Some postdoctoral positions are advertised below. It is recommended the prospective postdoctoral scientists approach Research Group Leaders for positions directly. There are many funding opportunities available and Group Leaders may discuss these with you. In this case it is always good to forward plan.
The University of Queensland, the Australian Research Council and a wide range of other agencies offer postdoctoral fellowships to Australian and International PhDs.
