Visitor Service Officers (Casual)

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Reef HQ Aquarium has a number of casual employment opportunities for Visitor Services Officers (VSO). Successful applicants are appointed through a casual employment contract and may or may not be offered shifts. An ability to work in more than one VSO area is desirable but not essential.

Applicants must supply all the following:

  1. A completed Visitor Services Officer Application Form.
  2. A current résumé.  NOTE: Where qualifications, licenses, certificates, Dive Medical etc are required, these should be added as extra pages in the résumé or may be submitted as scanned copies to recruitment@gbrmpa.gov.au.
  3. A cover letter demonstrating your ability to meet the specific position criteria for the position e.g. VSO – Education; these requirements are listed below. This is to be attached via the 'Selection Criteria' field on the Apply Online page.
  4. A completed Health Declaration Form (Casual Employment).

A. VSO - SCUBA Divers

Reef HQ Aquarium is the world's largest living coral reef aquarium. The Living Systems Team requires casual divers/aquarists to assist with diving duties. A copy of relevant qualifications, licenses and certificates are to be supplied on submitting your application. Highly suitable applicants would have:

  • SCUBA diving certification (must have a minimum dive qualification of Divemaster or ADAS)
  • A current Occupational Diving Medical (AS2299.1)
  • A current nationally recognised First Aid Statement of Attainment, and a current CPR and Oxygen Administration Statement of Attainment
  • Experience working as a diver (commercial, recreational industry or scientific)
  • Experience working in an aquarium or aquaculture
  • Extensive knowledge of marine science

B. VSO - Education

Reef HQ Aquarium is the National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Reef education programs are facilitated to students at all stages of learning. Casual education staff may work across a number of areas including assisting with the delivery of reef education programs for visiting school groups during the day, facilitating reef sleepovers at night and running children’s school holiday programs. Some casual education staff also work as tour guides delivering the daily program of talks and tours at Reef HQ Aquarium. Casual education staff who also possess the relevant scuba diver qualifications may also undertake diving duties to support Reef HQ Aquarium’s reef videoconferencing program.

Highly suitable applicants would:

  • Have well-developed communication skills, including the ability to present talks and tours or education programs to groups of people of all ages from children to adults.
  • Have a very good understanding of the marine environment.
  • Hold or be willing to apply for a "Blue Card" issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian and indicates that a person is eligible to work with children and young people in Queensland.
  • A current Senior First Aid Certificate, including current CPR and Oxygen Administration training.
  • Be flexible with working hours that may include working weekdays, weekends, during the daytime, evenings or overnight when required.
  • Possess Scuba diving qualifications (desirable but not essential).  Scuba divers must have a minimum dive qualification of Divemaster or ADAS Aquarium Diver.

C. VSO - Retail (Admissions Desk, Waterview Cafe, and Reef In-store Gift Shop)

  • Demonstrate strong customer service focus.
  • Be able to work flexible hours including weekends.
  • Have previous retail or hospitality experience (Food Handlers and Barista Certificates, highly desirable).
  • Have previous experience in cash handling and till reconciliation (essential).

D. VSO - Lucky T Turtle (Reef HQ Aquarium's Mascot)

Lucky T Turtle is the ever loveable Reef HQ Aquarium mascot that receives 'rock-star' attention whenever it makes an appearance. Highly suitable applicants would:

  • Be a minimum of 180 cm and maximum of 185cm tall.
  • Hold or be willing to apply for a "Blue Card" issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian and indicates that a person is eligible to work with children and young people in Queensland.
  • Be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Be openly creative.

E. VSO – Trades (Capital Works Assistant)

A Capital Works Assistant provides operational support within medium to large scale capital works projects at ReefHQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium. They will be actively engaged in multiple components of capital works projects (including but not limited to demolition, site preparation, non-commercial plumbing, assisting with deliveries, simple carpentry, general maintenance and clean-up).  Highly suitable applicants would:

  • Have trade qualifications in construction and/or relevant industry experience.
  • Hold a "White Card" (General Construction Induction).
  • Current unrestricted manual driver’s license (preferred).
